Biographical Notes
Evelyn Randal Beckett was born on 20 February 1884 at Great Crosby, Lancashire, England, the son of William Henry Beckett and his second wife, Elizabeth Sophia née Randal. William’s first wife had died in 1873 and William married Elizabeth in 1880. William and Elizabeth with his five children of his first marriage and their three came to New Zealand when Evelyn was very young. William was recordd as a farmer at Waimate, Canterbury, in 1887. A daughter was born in 1891 at Waimate. Evelyn married Amelia Franklin on 3 April 1912 at Waimate and their son, Jack Randal Beckett, was born on 3 September 1915 there. He was a bank clerk before becoming a company manager. He was a salesman at Waimate when he enlisted on 6 June 1918 at Timaru and had served for four years with the Waimate Volunteers. He named his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs A. Beckett, Naylor Street, Waimate. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. E. R. Beckett saw no overseas service. After the war Evelyn and Amelia moved to Fairlie and then to Gisborne. Jack started school at Fairlie, transferring to Fairlie in 1924. Evelyn Randal Beckett died on 30 July 1965 at Hamilton and was cremated at Hamilton Park. Amelia died in 1973 and was cremated at Rotorua. Jack served in World War Two; Henry Edward Beckett, a nephew of Evelyn, served in World War One.
