Biographical Notes

Archibald Brown MacDougall was born on 6 December 1887 at Addiewell, West Calder, Midlothian, Scotland, the third son of Henry and Mary (née Hastie) MacDougall. He was at home with his family at West Calder, Midlothian, in 1891, and in 1901 at Lanark, Lanarkshire, a scholar. By 1911 he was a clerk residing at Fairview Road, Timaru, New Zealand. He had been resident in Timaru since about 1909. In 1914 he visited his home in Lanarkshire, Scotland, having left in April and travelled with Mr F. Williams of Timaru – surely Frank Williams, 6/2809. They arrived at Plymouth on the day war was declared. On his return to New Zealand in December 1914, Archibald spoke with a “Herald” reporter. His impressions are related in the Timaru Herald article attached.

Archibald MacDougall, himself, enlisted with the New Zealand Forces on 18 April 1915. An ironmonger, single and Presbyterian, he named his father as next-of-kin – Hny MacDougall, 4 St Vincent Place, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He gave his address as C/o B. W. (or W. B.) Williams, Fritz Street, Timaru. This was Bertram Willis Williams, the brother of the afore-mentioned Frank Williams. Lance Corporal A. B. MacDougall embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, leaving Wellington for Suez, Egypt, on 14 August 1915 per the “Willochra”. By December 1815 he was suffering from severe enteric. He returned to New Zealand in March 1916, possibly as an invalid.

In 1920 at Invercargill, he married Jane Galt. They lived in Southland for many years, retiring to Dunedin. Archibald Brown MacDougall died on 27 March 1977 at Dunedin, aged 89 years. He was cremated at Andersons Bay, Dunedin, his ashes interred there with a services plaque. When Jane died in 1988, aged 96 years, her ashes were interred in the same plot.
