Biographical Notes
William Francis Mangin was born on 25 November 1891 at Timaru, the eldest son of Robert and Agnes (née Hay). His mother may well have come back to Timaru from mid-Canterbury for the births of her three sons. He was educated at Selwyn School until the family moved to the North Island in 1900 when he transferred to Onga Onga School. In 1914 William was a painter at Timaru, relocating to his parents’ home at Rototawai, Featherston, and woring as a ploughman prior to enlistment. Enlisting on 28 April 1915 at Trentham, William Francis Mangin named his father as next-of-kin – R. Mangin, Rototawai, Featherston. Sergeant W. F. Mangin embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, leaving Wellington for Suez, Egypt on 9 October 1915 per the “Tahiti”. His brother Orton departed by the same embarkation. William married Jessie Preston Johnston in 1920. They lived in Wellington and William returned to his painting trade. After Jessie died in 1957 at Wellington, William retired to Christchurch where he died on 14 August 1966, aged 74 years. Both his brothers, Orten Avena Mangin and George Stanley Mangin, served in World War One; as did several cousins – John Thomas Mangin, who was killed in action in 1918 in France, Harold Leslie Mangin, Reginald James Leslie Duff and George Leslie Duff; and others connected to the family - Arnold Haswell Cartwright, George Albert Cartwright.
