Biographical Notes
Harold Leslie Mangin was born on 2 April 1893 at Timaru, the third son of John Thomas and Eliza Margaret (née Hay). His mother may well have come back to Timaru from mid-Canterbury for the births of Harold and his brother Leonard in 1895. Harold was a farmer at Methven when he enlisted and named his father as next-of-kin – John Thomas Mangin, Methven. He was still serving in the Territorial force. Riflleman H. L. Mangin embarked with the 7th Reinforcements, leaving for Plymouth, England per the “Mokoia” on 21 August 1916.
Harold married Cecilia Stoba in 1921. He died on 24 March 1978 at Ashburton, aged 84 years. The council records his burial in the Returned Services Section of Methven Cemetery. He is remembered on his wife’s headstone, Cecilia having died in 1973.

His brother, John Thomas Mangin, was killed in action in 1918 in France. Several cousins served in World War One - William Francis Mangin, Orton Avena Mangin and George Stanley Mangin, Reginald James Leslie Duff and George Leslie Duff; and others connected to the family - Arnold Haswell Cartwright, George Albert Cartwright.
