Biographical Notes
George Stanley Mangin, known as Stanley, was born on 7 January 1895 at Timaru, the youngest son of Robert and Agnes (née Hay). His mother may well have come back to Timaru from mid-Canterbury for the births of her three sons. The family had moved to the North Island in 1900, when Stanley started at Onga Onga School. He was a shepherd at Kaitoke, Dannevirke, and single when he enlisted on 22 December 1915 at Trentham. He named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Mangin, C/o W. E. Bidwell, Featherston. He was still serving with the 17th Ruahine Regiment. Lance Corporal G. S. Mangin embarked with the 27th Reinforcements on 16 July 1917 per the “Athenic” for Liverpool, England. After the war, George returned to shepherding. He married Rhoda Kathleen Wilton in 1920. George Stanley Mangin died on 23 August 1980 at Dannevirke, aged 85 years. He was buried at Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke, with Rhoda who had died in 1979. Both his brothers, William Francis Mangin and Orton Avena Mangin, served in World War One; as did several cousins – John Thomas Mangin, who was killed in action in 1918 in France, Harold Leslie Mangin, Reginald James Leslie Duff and George Leslie Duff; and others connected to the family - Arnold Haswell Cartwright, George Albert Cartwright. Robert Keith Mangin, a son of Stanley and Rhoda, served in World War Two.
