Biographical Notes
Reginald James Leonard Duff was born on 8 May 1896 at Timaru, the eldest son of James and Mary Jane (née Hay). Reginald was a teamster at Methven and single when he enlisted. H named his father as next-of-kin – James Duff, Blackford Street, Methven. He was already serving with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles (Territorial). Trooper R. J. L. Duff embarked with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, Mounted Machine-Gun Section, leaving Wellington for Suez, Egypt, per the “Manuka” on 5 October 1916. Reginald died on 21 August 1974 at Ashburton, aged 78 years, and was buried in the Returned Services Section of Methven Cemetery, where his parents are also buried. His brother, George Leslie Duff, also served in World War One; as did several cousins – John Thomas Mangin, who was killed in action in 1918 in France, Harold Leslie Mangin, William Francis Mangin, Orton Avena Mangin and George Stanley Mangin; and others connected to the family - Arnold Haswell Cartwright, George Albert Cartwright.
