Biographical Notes

George Leslie Duff was born on 28 May 1897 at Timaru, the second son of James and Mary Jane (née Hay). George was a farm hand at Masterton and single when he enlisted. H named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs James Duff, Methven. He was already serving with the 9th Mounted Rifles (Territorial). Trooper G. L. Duff embarked for Suez, Egypt, per the “Tofua” on 13 November 1917.

George married Ada Ruby Chapman in 1921. He died on 12 October 1957 at Palmerston North, aged 60 years, and was buried in Kelvin Grove Cemetery there. Ada died in 1978 and was buried with him.

His older brother, Reginald James Leonard Duff, also served in World War One; as did several cousins – John Thomas Mangin, who was killed in action in 1918 in France, Harold Leslie Mangin, William Francis Mangin, Orton Avena Mangin and George Stanley Mangin; and others connected to the family - Arnold Haswell Cartwright and George Albert Cartwright.
