Hawke embarked with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the 10th Reinforcements, departing from Wellington on 144 March 1916 for Suez, Egypt.

S. J. Hawke, 7/2264, Hunter, returned home from Egypt in April 1919 on the troopship Kaikoura (Daft 230), which was due on 17 April 1919.
