Biographical Notes

Thomas Harold Boyd was born on 19 January 1881 at Avoca, Victoria, Australia, the second son of Thomas Henry and Mary Catherine (née Thompson) Boyd. Harold, as he was knaown, married Ellen Margaret Fogarty in 1916 in New Zealand. Ellen died on 24 April 1917 at Waimate, just 22 years old. Harold was a contracting plasterer at Waimate when his name was drawn in the ninth ballot in July 1917. He had been eleven years in New Zealand and was a widower when he enlisted (as Harold Thomas Boyd) on 18 July 1917 at Timaru. He named his brother as next-of-kin – Mr Percy Herbert Boyd, Mill Road, Waimate. Harold and Percy would appear to have come to New Zealand about the same time. Harold Thomas Boyd saw only 21 days of service, being afflicted with hydrococele and having a history of rheumatism. In 1919 at Waimate, Harold married Catherine Harriet Neeson. Harold Thomas Boyd died on 26 May 1945 at the Waimate Public Hospital, aged 64, and was buried in the Waimate Old Cemetery. His brother, Percy Herbert Boyd, also enlisted with the New Zealand Forces.
