Biographical Notes
Albert Owen Taylor was born (Albert Owen Corkhill) on 24 March 1883 at Waimate, to Ada Jane Corkhill. Ada married Own Taylor on 21 July 1885 at Waimate. Their five children (one daughter and five sons) were all born in Southland. Owen Taylor was accidentally killed at Dipton on 2 January 1907, when the wheel of his dray passed over his head. Ada died in 1922. By 1911 Albert was living at Ikawai, and that was his address when he enlisted on 17 September 1917. He nominated his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Ada Taylor, Dipton, Southland. The one person dependent on him was his mother. He had served with the Wallace Mounted Rifles until the unit was disbanded.
Private A. O. Taylor embarked with the 41st Reinforcements, per the “Ulimaroa”, on 27 July 1918. He returned to New Zealand by a draft which was on the ex-German Liner Adolf Woermann and was expected at Wellington on 28 September 1919.
Albert Owen Taylor departed from Wellington, New Zealand, per the “Arawa”, arriving at Southampton, England, on 3 March 1920. He was 38 years old, a blacksmith. In the June quarter 1920, in registration district of Kingsclere, Hampshire, Albert O. Taylor married Winifred E. K. Weston. Owen William Taylor was born on 28 November 1920 in England, his birth registered at Kinsclere. Albert Owen and Winifred Emily Kate Taylor were at Waimate by 1928. Owen William Taylor married Ellen Edith Collins in 1942, the year in which his name appeared on the Nominal Rolls for World War II.
Albert Owen Taylor died on 6 October 1946, aged 63 years, and was buried in the Waimate Old Cemetery. Winifred died in 1915. The name of A. O. Taylor is recorded on the Redcliff District Memorial as Served Overseas.
