Biographical Notes
Frederick Lawson Hart was born on 29 March 1891 at Winchester, the eldest child of Thomas Lawson and Emily Rose (née Hawke) Hart. He was baptised on 29 March 1891 in the Winchester Anglican Parish. Thomas Hart was a wool scourer and flax miller in the Winchester area. In 1898 he obtained a section of the Waikakahi Estate in Waimate County. There he farmed”Rosedale” (Morven) until 1921. Frederick’s early education was at Winchester School, from where he transferred to Waihao Native School near Waimate, when the family moved. From the Native School, he went on to Waimate District High School.
F. L. Hart was a farmer at Morven when he enlisted. He had served with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. Trooper Hart embarked with the Mounted Rifles of the 24th Reinforcements, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, per the “Moeraki” on 19 April 1917, and transferring to the “Port Sydney” at Sydney. He arrived back in New Zealand in August 1919, per the “Ulimaroa”.
A block of 814 acres in the Waitaki district was transferred to Frederick Lawson Hart, a returned soldier, in September 1919. A few months later, his engagement to Thelma Medlicott, of Waimate, was announced. Frederick Lawson Hart and Gertrude Thelma Medlicott married in 1921 at Waimate. Frederick died on 20 August 1947 at Greenhills, Waikakahi, Waimate, and was buried at the Waimate Old Cemetery, a services memorial marking his grave. The name of F. L. Hart is recorded on the Morven Roll of Honour, as Served Overseas.
