Biographical Notes

Herbert Inkster was born, as Herbert Samuel Derrick, on 15 August 1897 at Dunedin. He was, it appears, born to Sarah’s sister and brought up by Sarah (née Derrick) and Arthur Inkster. Herbert was a clerk residing at Mill Road, Waimate, when he enlisted, naming his father as next-of-kin – Arthur Inkster, Waimate, Canterbury. Private H. Inkster embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Reinforcements per the “Manganui” on 21 November 1917. Leaving from Wellington he headed for Liverpool, England. He returned to New Zealand by the “Cordoba” which was expected at Wellington on 30 August 1919. Herbert married Rita Violet Emmeline Dunkley in 1928. He died on 3 May 1958 at Christchurch and was buried in Ruru Lawn Cemetery. Rita died in 1975. His mother Sarah died in 1938 and his father Arthur in 1939, both buried at Waimate. Several cousins of Herbert served in World War One – Robert James Inkster, Edwin Clifford Inkster, James Lawrence Inkster and Herbert Andrew Inkster.
