Biographical Notes

Francis Thomas John Hooper was born on 2 March 1894 at Temuka, the eldest son of James and Martha Edith (Edith, née White) Hooper. He was educated at Temuka School. Francis was a storeman for the Christchurch City Council when he enlisted, naming his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs E. M. Hooper, 211 Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch. He had married Ethel May Stevens on 28 March 1915 at Christchurch. Their son, Eric Vivian Wood Hooper, was born on 12 September 1916 at Christchurch. Francis’ name was drawn in a ballot. Francis Thomas John Hooper, a printers assistant, was listed on the 1917 Reserve Roll. Francis Thomas John Hooper died on 6 January 1938 at the Christchurch Hospital, aged 43, and was buried in Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch.
