Biographical Notes

Robert Black was born on 10 October 1896 at Christchurch, the son of William and Mary (née Hewitt) Black. In 1903 Robert transferred from Spotswood School to Waihaorunga School. William Black had taken up “Waihao Grange” at Waihao Downs. At Waihaorunga Robert met with success in 1912 when he received a prize for third in Standard IV and was rewarded for first class attendance. Robert was a shepherd at Waihaorunga when he enlisted on 20 November 1917 at Timaru and named his father as next-of-kin – William Black, Farmer, Waimate. Private R. Black embarked with the 41st Reinforcements on 27 July 1918. He returned to New Zealand by the “Cordoba” which was expected at Wellington on 30 August 1919. After his return Robert may have been a runholder for many years before turning to fencing. He died on 21 January 1977, aged 80, and was cremated at Salisbury Park Crematorium, Timaru.
