Biographical Notes
Francis James Daily, known as Frank, was born on 1 June 1896 at Temuka, the youngest son of John Joseph and Mary Jane (née Burton) Daily. Frank was educated at Temuka Primary School.
He enlisted on 20 September 1916, naming his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Mary Jane Daily, 248 Manchester Street, Christchurch. She was later at Clifford House, Featherston. He was a fruiterer for the Farmers’ Co-op at Temuka but went to Christcurch to enlist. Frank was already serving with B Company, 2nd South Canterbury Regiment.
Sergeant F. J. Daily embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade per the “Devon” on 5 April 1917. In January 1918, word was received that Sergeant F. J. Daily, 24th Reinforcements, had been seriously wounded in the right shoulder and face on 7 January. He had been on the Administration Staff in England unril November 1917 when he proceeded to France. Lance-Corporal F. J. Daily, 56804, of Featherston, returned to New Zealand by Draft No. 175 which was due in New Zealand in September 1918. After returning from the Front he spent a few days in February 1919 with his oldest brother, Fredercik Daily, at Temuka.
Frank Daily married Margery Walding in 1922; they divorced in 1947. Francis James Daily died on 4 June 1978, of Titirangi, aged 82, and was buried with his mother in Purewa Cemetery.
