Biographical Notes
Frederick Harris, known as Fred, was born on 27 August 1899 at Timaru, the son of William Henry and Mary Ann (née Askew) Harris. He was educated at Timaru Main School and Waimataitai School, transferring there in 1907. Frederick attested on 10 October 1917, giving a birth year of 1897. He was a driver, single, and residing with his mother at Grey Road, Timaru. He was serving with the Territorials.
Frederick Harris married Doris May Aiken in 1928. Fred and Doris had two sons before he died on 8 July 1932 at the Christchurch Hospital. He had been riding his bicycle when he was knocked down by a motor-car on 10 May. He suffered a compound fracture of the right leg, which led to his death two months later. He was buried in Sydenham Cemetery. Doris who married again, died in 1977 and was buried with Fred.
His brother John (Richard John Harris), served in World War One, and another brother, Victor Roy Harris, also enlisted but did not serve overeas. William Henry Harris was found dead in the Avon in June 1916. He was 64 years old, and had been living by himself in Christchurch, being separated from his wife who lived in Timaru. Mary Ann Harris, who had been a widow at Timaru in 1928, died in September 1929 at her daughter’s residence in Christchurch (“Late of Timaru.”). William and Mary are buried together at Linwood Cemetery.
