Biographical Notes
John Wesley Peck, born on 27 June 1882 at Waimate, was the third son of Matthew Bridgeman and Martha (née Stuffins) Peck. When John enlisted, he was a farmer at Bush Road, Waimate, while his father was at Willowbridge. His mother had died in 1911. Rifleman J. W. Peck embarked on 12 June 1917 wit the New Zealand Rifle Brigade J. W. Peck, 52647, Waimate, was listed in the nominal roll of troops returninig from England by the “Corinthic” (Draft 396) which was expected at Wellington on 22 September 1919. John was bringing home his new wife – Ada Dorothy Barker, whom he had married in 1919 in Cambridgeshire, England. Sadly Ada was to die in 1927. John died in 1965 and was buried with Ada in the Waimate Cemetery. The name of J. Peck is inscribed on the Willowbridge and Studholme District First World War Roll of Honour. The name of C. Peck is also inscribed there – perhaps G. Peck, John’s brother George? Two of John’s brothers also served in World War One – George Albain Peck and Albert Edward Peck.
