Biographical Notes
David Arthur Nelson was born on 24 February 1886 at Waimate, the fourth son of William Robertson and Catherine (née Graham) Nelson. He was most probably educated at the Waimate District High School. His name was recorded on the New Zealand World War One Nominal Rolls in the Australian Expeditionary Force, with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. His next-of-kin was his father – W. Nelson, Bell Street, Waimate. His original service number was 169; a later number was assigned – N 102040. The record held by National Archives of Australia consists of an empty envelope. It may be that his records have been amalgamated with his World War Two records. David married Ophyra Leiteritz in 1928 in New South Wales. He died in 1947. His younger brothers, Horatio Charles Nelson and Herbert Alfred Nelson both served in World War I with the New Zealand Forces.
