Biographical Notes
Hector Edward Evans was the younger son of Edward and Fanny Chadwick (née Baxter) Evans. He was born on 4 January 1894 at Arundel and educated at the local school. His mother died the year before he went overseas, and his father died a few months after his return. Hector Evans had been medically examined in August 1914 at Timaru but was deemed unfit. He then attested on 12 October 1917 at Timaru. Private H. E. Evans embarked by the “Athenic” on 13 June 1918 with the 39th Reinforcements, headed for Liverpool. Pte. H. E. Evans, Arundel, was one of 402 Canterbury men who returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” which was due at Lyttelton on 16 August 1919. He had embarked on 4 July at LiverpoolIn 1938 he married Mary Evelyn Major. He died on 29 June 1957 at Ashburton, aged 63, and was buried in the Ashburton Cemetery. Mary died in in 1973 and was buried with Hector.
