Biographical Notes
Raymond William Coppard was born on 27 August 1897 at Dallington, Sussex, England, the eldest son of William and Elizabeth Kate (Kate, née Noakes) Coppard. He was still in England with his family in 1911, and must have come to New Zealand soon after. A sixth child was born to William and Kate in 1912/1913 in New Zealand. It was 1912 when some of the family entered Temuka School. He was serving with the North Canterbury and Westland Regiment when he enlisted on 17 September 1917 at Christchurch. Private R. W. Coppard embarked with Auckland Infantry Regiment of the 34th Reinforcements for Liverpool, England, on 8 February 1918 by the “Maunganui”. R. W. Coppard, of Temuka, was one of more than 800 men who returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” in August 1919. Raymond married Hilda Amy Elizabeth Voice in 1926. He died on 23 December 1990 at Christchurch and was interred at St Peter’s Anglican Churchyard, Riccarton, Christchurch. His service number was amended to 68639 on the personnel file held by Archives NZ.
