Biographical Notes
John Henry Royal Cook was born on 9 November 1897 at Christchurch, the first-born of John Henry and Stella Marina (née Thurgar) Cook. When John, junior, enlisted, he was a postal officer and was living with the family on Craigie Avenue, Timaru. Private J. H. R. Cook embarked for Plymouth, England, on 10 July 1918, with the 40th Reinforcements per the “Tahiti”.
Private J. H. R. Cook returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” which was due at Lyttelton about 14 August 1919. In 1932 he married Edna Violet Smith. John Henry Royal Cook died on 18 September 1879 at Wellington and was cremated there.
