Biographical Notes
Stuart and Alice Margaret (née Philpott) Griffiths. He was educated at Timaru Main School. His mother died in 1917 at Timaru. His eldest brother, George Robert Griffiths, enlisted for service; the second brother, Charles Robert Stuart Griffiths, died young; and the third, Leonard Stuart Griffiths, served in World War One. Arthur was a furniture salesman for NZ Farmers at Rangiora when he enlisted. He may well have given himself two extra years to allow him to enlist. He named his father as next-of-kin. Sergeant A. S. Griffiths embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion of the 14th Reinforcements on 26 June 1916, leaving from Wellington. Corporal A. S. Griffiths, of Timaru, returned home by the hospital ship “Marama”, which arrived at Auckland on 20 July 1919, with 672 men aboard. In 1921 he married May Lizzie Crisp. Arthur Stuart Griffiths died on 6 September 1952 at Christchurch, aged 56 years.
