Biographical Notes
Malcolm Guild was born on 27 December 1887 at Temuka, the youngest son of James and Janet Morton (née Storry) Guild. Along with his siblings he was educated at Milford School near Temuka. His father died in August 1914, right on the outbreak of war. Mr James Guild, senior, who had come out from Scotland in 1859, was well-known in the district as the farmer of “Trevenna”, Temuka.
Gunner Malcolm Guild embarked with the New Zealand Field Artillery on 2 April 1917, per the “Corinthic”. He returned to New Zealand aboard the “Chupra”, one of 732 soldiers due at Lyttelton about July 22nd, 1919. In 1922 he married Emily Freeman Mitchell, whose sister Caroline had married his brother, James Alexander Guild. Malcolm died at Timaru on 25 July 1979, aged 91, and was buried at Temuka with Emily. James Alexander Guild also served in World War One.
