Biographical Notes
John Adams was born – as John Edmundson - on 24 January 1883 at Ballymena, Northern Ireland, the elder son of William Adams (Edmundson) and Margaret née Cowan. His mother died in 1891 at Antrim, Northern Ireland, and the following year his father emigrated to Victoria, Australia, with four children. Before emigration William had changed his surname and that of his children to Adams. John Adams, No 7601, of Fairlie, served with the 9th Contingent of the New Zealand Forces in the South African War, apparently putting his age up. John Adams of Strathconan, Fairlie, who was listed in the 1916 Reserve Rolls, was probably called up in 1917. He enlisted on 18 July 1917, stating that he had been in New Zealand for 16 years. He was single, a labourer at Strathconan. He named a friend as next-of-kin – John McBeth, Fairlie, and added his father – William Adams, Archdale, Victoria, Australia (the same address he had been at in 1902). J. Adams, 62897, of Fairlie, returned to New Zealand aboard the “Chupra”, one of 732 soldiers due at Lyttelton about July 22nd, 1919. He was discharged on 25 August 1919, on the termination of his period of engagement. His contact address at 1 November 1920 was given as Pots Office, Fairlie, which was amended to Archdale Junction, Victoria, Australia. John Adams, farmer of Archdale, died on 8 January 1938 at Heidelberg Hospital, Victoria, aged 56 years, which suggests an earlier birth year.
