Biographical Notes

Thomas Philip Quick, known as Philip, was born on 8 May 1898 at Christchurch, the only son of Thomas Quick and his second wife, Rose Emily née Lane. Thomas, senior, was twice married and had five daughters by his first wife, Martha, who died in 1888, and eight daughters by Rose. Thomas, junior, started his education at Addington School, Christchurch, and transferred to Timaru Main School in early 1909. In 1907 at Addington Philip Quick gained an attendance certificate for Standard III. Philip Thomas Quick gained a Standard VI Proficiency Certificate at the Timaru Technical School in 1914. Some of his sisters attended Timaru Main School.

When he enlisted on 1 June 1917, he was only 19 years old, although he may have initially given his birth year as 1897. He had been rejected for the Military Forces because he was under age. He was living at home in Baker Street, Timaru and was employed as an engine cleaner for New Zealand Railways. Corporal T. P. Quick embarked at Wellington with the Wellington Infantry Regiment of the 33rd Reinforcements on 31 December 1917, headed for Glasgow, Scotland, per the “Athenic”. Private Quick embarked at London on 8 June 1919 for the return to New Zealand by the “Chupra”, and disembarked on 28 July 1919. His mother died at Timaru Hospital in January 1920. His father, who was a prominent lay-preacher in the Wesleyan Church, died in 1931 at Reefton Hospital. Thomas married Ivy Grace Campbell on 8 June 1921 at the Weston-Waiareka Presbyterian Church, North Otago. He died on 10 July 1971 at Auckland, aged 73, and was cremated, his ashes being interred at Waikumete Cemetery.
