Biographical Notes
Michael Henry Ford, known as Henry, was born on 29 May 1891 at Heddon Bush, Southland, the son of John Burke and Bridget (née Hynes) Ford. He was a farmer at Heddon Bush when he enlisted. He embarked for Suez, Egypt, with the Otago Mounted Rifles on 14 February 1915. M. H. Ford arrived home in August 1917, having been previously reported as seriously ill. He was discharged on 17 November 1917, as unfit because of tuberculosis. Michael Henry Ford married Margaret Jane Toomey in 1918. They resided at Temuka and their daughter, Joan Patricia Ford, was born on 5 July 1919 at Timaru. Private Michael Henry Ford, 9/816, died of tuberculosis on 25 March 1921 at Heddon Bush. He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill, with four siblings who had died young. His parentes were subsequently interred there too. A services stone marks his grave. His medals were sent to his wife, Mrs Henry Ford, Temuka, who was his legal next-of-kin.
