Biographical Notes

Born in Scotland in 1886, Archie had emigrated to New Zealand before the first World War. Prior to enlistment he was employed as a ploughman in Takapau in Hawkes Bay. Archie enlisted on 7 February 1916. After his initial training in New Zealand he embarked with B Company, 13th Reinforcements on 27 May 1916. Soon after he arrived he was posted to the 3rd Reserve Battalion, Wellington Regiment on 27 July 1916. Archie then proceeded overseas with the unit (to France) in September after further training at Sling camp. At Rouen he joined the 2 Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, in the field on 26 September 1916, where he served for five months. On 23 February he was transferred again, this time to the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. He was awarded a period of leave in the UK from 13 to 26 September 1917, after which he returned to his unit in the field. On 26 September 1918 he was once again awarded leave in the UK, but this time for three weeks, returning to his unit on 18 October 1918. Soon after the war ended. Archie departed for home on the Pakeha from Tilbury on 12 April 1919, arriving in New Zealand on 30 May 1919. He was discharged from the army on 27 June 1919. Archie had served for 137 days in New Zealand and 3 years and 4 days overseas. For his service he was awarded the British War and Victory Medals, issued in 1921. Archie passed away in 1981 at Temuka. His ashes rest at Salisbury Park Crematorium, Timaru, along with those of his wife Marjorie who died in 1968.
