Biographical Notes
William Burrows Tinsley Wright, known as Burrows, was born on 16 March 1896 at Croyden Siding, near Gore, the third son of Joseph Wright, from Cork, Ireland, and his wife, Ellen (née Watson) Wright, from the Isle of Wight (or county Down, Ireland). Along with his siblings, he was educated at Croydon Siding and Gore Main schools. Burrows was a cheesemaker at Tuturau when he was called up. The manager of the cheese factory applied for exemption for Burrows Wright from military camp “as it was impossible to get any one to take his place in the factory”. The application was granted. When he did enlist, he nominated as next-of-kin, his mother, Mrs E. Wright, 70 Cain Street, Timaru.
Both W. B. T. Wright and D. C. Wright , of Timaru, returned to New Zealand per the ‘Awarua’ which was due at Auckland about 19 November 1919. In 1921at Timaru he married Hannah Jane Wills. Hannah died in 1948 and was buried at Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Christchurch. William Burrows Tinsley Wright died on 26 April 1977 at Christchurch, aged 81 years. Two brothers of Burrows served in World War One - Robert James Wright, who died of wounds in France, and Donald Campbell Wright. A nephew, Robert John Wardrop, lost his life in World War Two.
