Biographical Notes

Donald Campbell Wright was born on 15 May 1897 at Gore, the fourth son of Joseph Wright, from Cork, Ireland, and his wife, Ellen (née Watson) Wright, from the Isle of Wight (or County Down, Ireland). Along with his siblings, he was educated at Croydon Siding and Gore Main schools. Donald was a telegraph cadet and living at home (70 Cain Street, Timaru) when he enlisted. He nominated as next-of-kin, his father, Joseph Wright, 70 Cain Street, Timaru. Both D. C. Wright and W. B. T. Wright , of Timaru, returned to New Zealand per the ‘Awarua’ which was due at Auckland about 19 November 1919. Donald Campbell Wright died on 1 March 1942 at Boggabri, New South Wales, Australia, aged 44 years. While he was buried in the Boggabri General Cemetery, he was also remembered on his parents’ headstone at Timaru. His father had died in 1935 and his mother died in October 1942. Two brothers of Donald served in World War One - Robert James Wright, who died of wounds in France, and William Burrows Tinsley Wright. A nephew, Robert John Wardrop, lost his life in World War Two.
