Biographical Notes
Neil Taylor was born on 2 July 1887 at Oamaru, the eldest of the three sons of Peter and Elizabeth (née Wylie) Taylor. Peter and Elizabeth were both from Orkney, Scotland, and married in 1885 in New Zealand. He and his siblings were educated at Teaneraki School near Oamaru. His father died in 1914 at Oamaru, his mother living for 35 more years. Both Neil Taylor and his brother, George Maxwell Taylor, were called up. Neil Taylor, a contractor at Hakataramea, who had been listed on the South Canterbury Reserve Roll in 1916, was medically examined in November 1916 at Waimate and was rejected as medically unfit. When he enlisted on 2 May 1917, he was single. He married Katherine O’Brien (Kate) on 17 October 1917 at Oamaru and she became his next-of-kin. Another brother, Frank Peter, served overseas in World War One. Neil died on 22 November 1960 at Lake Waitaki, aged 73 years, yet his death was not registered at Oamaru until 1961. He had appointed his wife, Katherine Taylor as sole executrix and trustee of his Will.
