Biographical Notes

William George Smith was born on 14 June 1881 at Geraldine, the second son of Stephen Thomas and Fanny (née Newport) Smith. W. G. Smith, Q.M.S., 7/1292, of Geraldine, returned to New Zealand from Egypt, in a draft of 1095, per the “Ulimaroa”, which was due at Auckland on 6 August 1919. He married Lillian Susan Squire in 1927 at Geraldine. While William lived to 92 years of age, Lillian died in 1939. His youngest brother, Samuel Richard Smith, was killed in action in 1916 in France.
