Biographical Notes

Ernest Percival Russell was born on 16 June 1881 (personnel file records 1885) at Poplar, London, the son of Joseph William and Catherine (née Baxter) Russell, who had married in 1879. In 1891 young Ernest and a brother were pupils at The Rookery, Kings Norton, Worcestershire. In 1901 he was a verterinary student residing at home. Joseph William Russell died on 17 October 1914 at Woodford Green, Essexbate granted to his widow Catherin Russell, and a son, James Victor Russell. When Ernest enlisted with the New Zealand Forces on 2 November 1916, he was a veterinary assistant residing at Cains Terrace, Timaru. He had been in New Zealand for eight years. E. P. Russell, 36049, of Timaru, returned to New Zealand from Egypt, in a draft of 1095, per the “Ulimaroa”, which was due at Auckland on 6 August 1919. On 14 October 1922, at the Cathedral Church of St Andrew, Sydney, New South Wales, Ernest Percival Russell married English-born Maude Eliza Jackson. Ernest, Maude and their two children, Anna C. (8 years) and William P. (7 years), took a trip home to England in 1932 per the “Esperance Bay”. Ernest was then 50 years old and a poultry farmer. Ernest Percival Russell, a retired poultry farmer of The Orchard, Medstead, Hampshire, died on 25 June 1958 at Lynton, Normandy, Surrey, England, aged 77 years. Adminstration of his estate was granted to his daughter, Anne Catherine Harrison - £2549.16s.11d. His wife, Maude eliza Russell, had died on 16 January 1958.
