Biographical Notes
William Charles Henry Pascoe, who was known as Charles or Charlie and enlisted as Charles Henry, was born on 5 May 1893 at Waimate. He was the second surviving son of John and Caroline Wilhelmina (Carrie, née Luck) Pascoe. Charlie was a twin of Agnes, they being the eleventh and twelfth children in a family of sixteen. Charles was educated at Hannaton and Willowbridge schools in South Canterbury. In July 1907 John Pascoe sold his farm and had a clearing sale at Studholme. The family moved to the North Island, Charles and his siblings going to Hamilton East School then on to Te Rapa School. Charlie is said to have taken a keen interest in boxing.
Charles Henry Pascoe enlisted on 25 August 1914 at Awapuni Camp. He was just 21 years old. He was already a volunteer with the Territorial Service. A bushman at Manunui, he named his father as next-of-kin – John Pascoe, Frankton Junction. Charlie Pascoe was there from the outset, but all too soon came the fatal day – Private C. H. Pascoe was killed in action on 1 August 1916 at the Somme. He was buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Srmentieres, France. “He did his duty bravely.” He is remembered in the World War One Hall of Memories at the Auckland War Memorial Museum and on the Wayside Cross at Taumarunui. The Taumarunui Memorial which was unveiled on 25 April 1922 is inscribed “To the Glory of God and Everlasting Remembrance of our Comrades who made the Supreme Sacrifice in the Great War 1914-18. May we be found worthy of their sacrifice.”
His youngest brother, Thomas Pascoe, also served in the war and was on duty in France when Charles was killed. And another brother, Richard David Pascoe, also enlisted.
