Biographical Notes
Oscar Dudley Oliver, known as Dudley, was born on 7 April 1892 at Pleasant Point and baptised there, the youngest son of James and Ellen (Eleanor, née Josling) Oliver. The family farmed Surrey Downs from about 1871, James having come from Surrey, England. Mr Oliver died in 1926, predeceased by his wife (1914). Dudley was educated at Pleasant Point School, going on to the Boys’ High School (Timaru). Lieutenant-Corporal O. D. Oliver, 7/1693, of Pleasant Point, returned to New Zealand from Egypt, in a draft of 1095, per the “Ulimaroa”, which was due at Auckland on 6 August 1919. Oscar Dudley Oliver died on 17 April 1961 at Timaru, aged 69 years, and was buried with his parents and several siblings at Pleasant Point. His brother, Albert Victor Oliver, also served in World War One.
