Biographical Notes

Donald James McDonald was born on 29 May 1893 at Lyttelton, the older son of John and Rose (née O’Neill) McDonald. He transferred to Timaru Main School from Waltham, Christchurch, when he was six years old. Donald was employed by the Education Department and living at home in Timaru when he enlisted. Private McDonald was attached to the New Zealand Medical Corps when he embarked with the Main Body on 16 October 1914.

Donald James McDonald married Ida Mary Victoria Palmer in 1920. He died on 30 January 1946 at Christchurch, and late of Hinds, aged 52 years, and was cremated at Bromley, Christchurch.
