Biographical Notes
Albert Benzie Mathieson was born on 7 May 1883 at Burnside, Green Island, Otago, the youngest of the five sons of John and Christian (Christina, née Benzie) Mathieson. His parents had married in 1865 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and their first son was born in 1867 at Green Island, New Zealand. Albert’s mother died three weeks after his birth. Albert was educated at Green Island School, leaving at the age of fourteen to work. In April 1893, nine year old Albert Mathieson suffered a severe cut to his cheek, when one of his father’s horses, which he was driving in a paddock, kicked him in the face. When he enlisted (as Albert Matheson), he was a slaughterman at Smithfield Freezing Works, and he gave his address as care of the Railway Hotel, Timaru. He had been listed on the Reserve Rolls as a slaughterman at Burnside, Green Island. Albert Matheson, 50064 [sic], of Timaru, returned to New Zealand from Egypt, in a draft of 1095, per the “Ulimaroa”, which was due at Auckland on 6 August 1919. He never married and he resided at Burnside, with his father until John died in 1922 and alone until shortly before his own death in 1973. Two brothers were listed on the Reserve Rolls – Alexander David Mathieson and George Benzie Mathieson.
