Biographical Notes
William Reynolds Lyne was born on 15 April 1898 at Methven, the oldest son of Robert Reynolds and Florence Mary (née Prior) Lyne. Florence died in 1906 at Methven, leaving six young children. Coming in 1908 with their father to Claremont, William and his siblings transferred to Claremont School from Methven. William went on to Timaru Boys’ High School. His father, who had remarried in 1910, died suddenly at his Claremont residence in September 1911.
Employed as a clerk and residing at Gore, William named as next-of-kin his sister, Florence Mona Lyne, who worked in the telephone exchange at Timaru. He was already serving with the Railway Engineers. He was only just nineteen when he embarked for overseas. Shortly before returning to New Zealand, he married Dorothy Honorah Eltham at St Andrews, Romford, Essex.
Sergeant W. R. Lyne returned to New Zealand per the ‘Awarua’ and reached Timaru by the express from Christchurch on 18 November 1919. He and his comrades were accorded a hearty welcome. They were met at the station by members of the Timaru Reception Committee and conveyed to their homes by cars provided.
William Reynolds Lyne died on 22 February 1933 at Timaru, where his grave is marked by a services stone. His widow lived on till 1992. William and Dorothy had two daughters.
