Biographical Notes
Ernest Edward Luscombe was born on 29 September 1889 at Makikihi, the son of Philip Henry Bond Luscombe and his second wife, Mary Matilda (née Wilkes) Luscombe. He was probably educated at Hook School, where his father was elected chairman of the school committee in 1890. Philip Henry Bond Luscombe died on 1 July 1904 at Waimate Hospital and Mrs Mary Matilda Luscombe died on 14 July 1910 at her home, Burleigh Farm, Makikihi.
Ernest was a farmer at St Andrews when his name was drawn in the Sixth Ballot in April 1917. He had experienced a few illnesses - pleurisy months ago; appendicitis 3 years ago; varicocele. He, too, nominated his sister as next-of-kin – Miss Mary Olive Luscombe, St Andrews, South Canterbury. Ernest Luscombe left Timaru for Trentham Camp with the 32nd Reinforcements on 23 July 1917, after being farewelled at the Drill Shed and receiving gift parcels from the ladies of the Patriotic Society. On 25 August 1917 he was promoted to corporal, but in September he was granted leave without pay and referred to the District Medical Board.
Ernest Edward Luscombe married Stella Eveline Fanny Coe on 15 July 1925 at St Andrew’s Church, St Andrews. Their first child was born the next year at Nurse Angland’s, Grey Road, Timaru. Ernest died on 16 November 1962 at Christchurch, aged 73 years, and was buried at Timaru with his wife who had died in 1946 with her new-born son. His older brother, Arthur Wilkes Luscombe, served in World War One, while another brother, Herbert John Luscombe, of St Andrews, was held for home service, and his sister, Mary Olive Luscombe, joined the Volunteer Aid Detachment and served in New Zealand.
