Biographical Notes
James Nicholas Gordon Hoskin, known as Gordon, was born on 26 December 1892 [per baptism register] or 2 January 1893 [per registration] at Timaru and baptised at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, with his brother Artileur, on 1 July 1894. He was the first-born of James Henry and Helen (Ellen) Henrietta (née Nicholls) Hoskin. Gordon was educated at Kennington and Winton schools in Southland. When he enlisted – as Gordon Hoskin - on 19 October 1915 at Trentham, he was a motor mechanic for an Ashburton business. Initially his father was named as next-of-kin – James Henry Hoskin, Otekaieke, North Otago. This was altered by the authority of his mother to Mrs Henrietta Hoskin, St Andrews, South Canterbury. G. Hoskin, 9/2037, of St Andrews, returned to New Zealand from Egypt, in a draft of 1095, per the “Ulimaroa”, which was due at Auckland on 6 August 1919. After the war Gordon resumed his work as an engineer, although he did apply, as a discharged soldier, to the Canterbury Land Board. Unfortunately, James Nicholas Gordon Hoskin had a propensity for breaking, entering and thieving, starting when he was still a schoolboy. In 1923 he was sentenced to two years imprisonment on such charges, and in 1936 to three months with hard labour. In the 1940s he married Lucy Patricia Collins and later turned to farming before retiring to Timaru. James Nicholas Gordon Hoskin was cremated, his plaque at Salisbury Park Crematorium inscribed as Gordon Hoskin. His brother, Artileur Hoskin, also served in World War One, as did cousins, Cecil Lancelot Hoskin, Edward David Hoskin and Tararua Augustus Wesley Nicholls, and an uncle, William Sidney Valentine Nicholls. Another uncle, George Albert Hoskin, served in the South African War. .
