Biographical Notes
Artileur Hoskin was born on 16 April 1894 at Washdyke near Timaru and baptised at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, with his brother Nicholas Gordon, on 1 July 1894. He was the younger son of James Henry and Helen (Ellen) Henrietta (née Nicholls) Hoskin. He was educated at Invercargill North and Winton schools in Southland. Artileur’s name was drawn in the military ballot and, when he enlisted on 12 January 1915 at Trentham, he was a labourer for his father at Otekaieke, whom he named as next-of-kin. He had served for 3½ years with the 10th N. O. (North Otago?) Regiment.
Artileur Hoskin was discharged on 6 July 1916 as medically unfit. Re-enlisting, however, he served with the Home Service Branch of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, being discharged on 6 April 1918. After the war he worked as a butcher and rabbit inspector before turning to farming. He married Margaret Anderina Thorburn (née Stringer) in 1925. Her first husband, John Thorburn, had been killed in action in 1917 in France. Artileur died on 22 February 1979 at Christchurch, aged 84 years, and Margaret in 1987.
His brother, Gordon Hoskin, also served in World War One, as did cousins, Cecil Lancelot Hoskin, Edward David Hoskin and Tararua Augustus Wesley Nicholls, and an uncle, William Sidney Valentine Nicholls. Another uncle, George Albert Hoskin, served in the South African War. .
