Biographical Notes
Hugh Herlihy was born on 14 July 1890 at Geraldine and baptised Roman Catholic on 6 August 1890 at Geraldine. He was the youngest son of Timothy Herlihy, who hailed from County Cook, Ireland, and Bridget Mary née McMiniman. Hugh was the only child to survive the parents, as their eldest son, Edward, died in 1903 at the age of 20, their second son, Daniel, died also in 1903 at the age of 17, and their only daughter, Julia, died in 1912 at the age of 31. Mrs Herlihy died in 1920 and Mr Herlihy in 1925. Hugh Herlihy, of Geraldine, returned to New Zealand per the “Mokoia”, arriving on 15 July 1918. Both before and after the war, Hugh was very involved with hockey – player, umpire, committee member. He married Mary Anne Fitzpatrick in 1925 and in 1928 they moved to Christchurch. His house at Geraldine had been burnt to the ground in 1926. A war pensioner, he died on 1 November 1957 at Christchurch, aged 67 years. His widow died more than nineteen years later.
