Biographical Notes

William George Granger was born on 12 February 1896 at Timaru, the third son of Joseph Loader and Mary Louisa (née Ryan) Granger. He was baptised on 23 March 1896 at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru. Rifleman W. G. Granger embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade of the 10th Reinforcements at Wellington for England on 15 November 1916. He returned to New Zealand in March 1918. The South Canterbury men came from Lyttelton by special train expected mid afternoon on the 19th March. William married Ruby Eliza Jane Vallance in 1925 at St Mary’s, Timaru. They had three sons and a daughter born at Timaru. William and Ruby seem to have gone their separate ways, perhaps in the 1940s, William living at Bunnythorpe. He died on 28 January 1966, aged 69 years and was cremated at Kelvin Grove Crematorium, Palmerston North. Ruby died in 1992 and was cremated at Salisbury Park.
