Biographical Notes
Stewart David Baxter was born on 22 March 1897 at Waitohi, Canterbury, the third son of Robert and Alice Maria (née Hunter) Baxter. He was educated at Lower Waitohi and Upper Waitohi schools, and briefly at Kakahu School. His mother died in January 1913 after a lengthy illness and not having fully recovered from a serious accident some years before. Mr Robert Baxter died in February 1917. Trooper S. D. Baxter embarked on 13 November 1917 for Suez, Egypt.
He married Pearl Jane Wilson in 1921. Stewart died on 19 June 1985 at Ashburton, aged 88 years, and was buried at Ashburton with Pearl who had predeceased hom by many years. His brother, Robert Hunter Baxter, also served, and John Wilson Baxter enlisied. A Roll of Honour of ex-pupils of Upper Waitohi School contains the names of twenty men who served in World War I and three who served in the South African War. Of the twenty, six lost their lives. S. D. Baxter and R. H. Baxter are two of the names inscribed thereon.
