Biographical Notes

Ernest Shepherd was born on 28 January 1890 at Oamaru, the third son of Samuel Thomas and Louisa Mary (née Matthews) Shepherd. He was educated at Oamaru South School. Ernest married Mary Shanks on 9 March 1915 at Oamaru, and they had a daughter, Elsie, born on 24 December 1916 at Temuka. Ernest Shepherd was called up and enlisted on 17 May 1918 at Temuka. He was then a pastry cook at Temuka, possibly with his oldest brother Samuel. Three brothers saw overseas service in World War One – Edward, who was missing for a time from 12 April 1918, John (Jack), who was wounded in the shoulder on 12 April 1918, and Harold.
