Biographical Notes
William Richard Hooper was born on 2 July 1894 at Temuka, the fourth son of Thomas Francis andMary (née Chapman) Hooper. He and his siblings were educated at Temuka School, William being enrolled at first before he was of school age. Mr Hooper died in 1914. William named his sister Kate - Mrs G. Walters, of Temuka - as his next-of-kin. Kate’s husband had embarked for the Front in 1914. It was William’s mother who received advice in September 1918 that Private W. R.Hooper had been admitted to a hospital in England on 28th August, suffering from phthisis. His brother, Guy Francis Hooper, enlisted for service.
