Biographical Notes
Leslie Moody was born on 13 June 1891 at Woodend, Canterbury, the son of Charles and Ann (née Seaward) Moody. On the outbreak of war he was a fireman with New Zealand Railways, stationed at Timaru. A single man, he named his father as next-of-kin. He enlisted on 15 August 1914 and departed with the South Island Railway Contingent for the Front. “Warlike preparations have developed with somewhat startling suddenness during the past couple of days.” [Otago Daily Times, 11 August 1914.] Sapper Moody embarked with the Samoan Advance Party.
Discharged at his own request after his return from Samoa, Leslie Moody was named in the September 1917 ballot and again enlisted. In the interim he had married Elizabeth Direen – on 13 March 1916 at Timaru. Their first child was born on 30 November 1917 at Timaru. Both Leslie and Elizabeth were cremated at Andersons Bay, Dunedin. While Leslie’s ashes were scattered, Elizabeth’s were interred in a family plot. An older brother, Harold Moody, died of wounds in 1917 in France.
