Biographical Notes
John Mills was born on 12 June 1888 at Dunedin, the eldest son of David Calder and Margaret (née McKinnon) Mills. He was educated at Green Island School, transferring to Temuka School when the family moved in 1902. John Mills was a shearer and drover at Cave when his name was drawn in the Military Service Ballot late in 1916. On enlisting he was a carrier, residing at the Federal Hotel at Fordell. His brother, David Calder Mills, died of wounds in 1915 at Gallipoli.
