Biographical Notes

James Joseph Hayes was born on 19 November 1883 at Lawrence, the son of James and Mary Hayes. He was a farm labourer at Omarama, Timaru, when his name was drawn in the military Service Ballot late in 1916. He gave his occupation as ploughman on enlisting, and named his sister as next-of kin – Miss Mary Hayes, Club Hotel, Timaru. Both his parents were by then deceased. John Philip Hayes, a brother, also served in World War I, and James is buried with him at Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
