Biographical Notes
William Maurice was born on 2 June 1884 at Timaru, the elder son of Alexander William and Mary (née Dore) Maurice. His father who was born in France died in September 1897 at Oamaru. His mother remarried in 1907 and died in 1916. William was educated at Oamaru Middle School, and spent his last few months at Oamaru North School. He received a second class Attendnace Certificate in 1891 at the Middle School. In 1893 William received a prize in the Junior Division of the Emmanuel Sunday School. William Maurice was an engineer, residing at Oamaru, when he enlisted. His next-of-kin was his sister May, Mrs John S. Glover. May’s husband, John Smith Glover, was killed in action in France in 1918. In 1919 William married Clarice Evelyn Hope Grenfell. His younger brother, Leonard, also served in World War I.
