Biographical Notes

William Henry Rippingale, known as Bill, was born on 21 January 1880 at Waimate, the youngest of the six sons of Charles and Mary (née Woodhead) Rippingale. They had one sister. Bill and his brothers Jack and Joe all served in the South African War. Bill was a rabbiter and packman at “The Poplars”, Methven, when he was called up.

Draft 211 - the troopship “Briton” - with over a thousand men aboard including Private W. H. Rippingale, of Temuka, was due at Lyttelton in late January 1919. Private Rippingale, of Temuka, who could not get to Temuka on Thursday, 30 February 1919, for the reception for the returning men, arrived by the express the next day and was cordially welcomed by the chairman of the Temuka Patriotic Committee.

William Henry Rippingale died on 24 September 1962 at Hanmer Springs, aged 82 years. He is buried at Hanmer Springs Cemetery, along with brothers Jack and Joe.
